The chairman of the Rivers State Chapter of RATTAWU, Comrade Lawrence A. I. Owhonda on Sunday confirmed that the planned protest by Nigerian Labour Congress will go on as planned and called on RATTAWU members and the general public to join them.
According to Comrade Owhondah, “We will not continue to suffer in penury in a State we owned together.”
He stated the reason for the protest and possible Labour strike as “No Promotion since 2015, No annual increment since 2015, No payment of gratuity to pensioners since 2015, No template to minimum wage payment, refusal to pay 9months minimum wage arrears, not even One month, deliberate sealing of Labour House, disruption of NLC meetings by sent Thugs, taking over and acquiring every government owned properties to himself e.g No. 22 William Jumbo Street old GRA PH, Civil Service is bureaucratic in nature and as such progression is by rank and file, refusal to allow Civil Service Laws operate normally in the system.”
“keeping some retirees who are supposed to vacate offices for next ranked Officers to take over as enshrined in the public service Laws.” he said
“The general public should NOTE that, Civil Servants are the engine room of every government, that the high-handedness administrative style of the present Governor has inflicted untold hardship on the workers/Civil Servants in Rivers State which has affected negatively to all and sundry.” he stated.
According to him, “Because if your father is not a civil servant or retiree, what about your Mother, Sister, Brother, Niece, Uncle, Aunt, Friend, Son, Daughter and Teacher, certainly one will fall into the aforementioned categories.”
“Join us as we protest for better tomorrow. 8th September, 2020 remains sacrosanct. Solidarity forever!” He stated.
